Framing Britney

I feel like it’s safe to say that most people have seen Framing Britney. If you have not, stop what you’re doing right now and do it. Whether you’re a Britney fan or not, everyone needs to see this documentary!

I’m a Britney Spears fan. I mean, I grew up with Britney as the Pop icon. Her Pepsi campaign was the first poster that ever graced my walls. I’m also big into documentaries. So, there was no need for convincing!

I’ll be honest I, went into this knowing very little. I will also say if you think you know, there’s so much more you don’t.

I’ve listened to a few commentaries on the documentary. Every single one of them has opened with an apology to Britney. I wholeheartedly agree. We all need to say sorry. Again, regardless if you’re a fan of Britney or not, no one deserves to go through what she has.

There are a lot of pieces. We’ve seen some of these pieces through the media’s eye. We’ve also seen these pieces secondhand while scrolling through a variety of social sites. It’s like playing whisper down the lane. By the time it gets to you, it’s an old-school fable told to terrify kids into eating their vegetables. If you ever questioned the reliability of Us Weekly, here are your answers.

Tabloids have never passed up an opportunity to twist a narrative. Once an unflattering photo with a misconstrued caption hits stands, it must be a fact. Why do people feel they have the right to invade someone’s space? Have any of the paparazzi ever asked themselves, would I want to be on the other end of this lens? No, because then we’d live in an honest place. The number of tabloid tales about Britney has to be record-breaking. Those barely scratch the surface.

I was in my early, like early teens, when this all fell into the public eye. Most of what I knew came from reading trashy headlines. But that’s not even the beginning. It goes way back. From the very beginning of Britney’s career, she’s never been treated fairly. She shattered glass ceilings before we even grasped the idea of glass ceilings. The way she held herself through sexist interviews and heinous comments was heroic, to say the very least. I was appalled to hear some of the interviews she sat through. I was utterly disappointed by the Diane Sawyer interview. But I was most crushed by the snippets from Justin Timberlake’s radio interview. There are three sides to every story: his, hers, and what really happened. To hear the way he took control of the story is sort of disgusting. It’s even more disgusting to hear the way these boys cheered about his sexual “conquer” on the radio. No one saw a problem with this?

People saw a problem, but it was more of the aftermath of all the others. A person can only handle so much. Britney hit her breaking point. Unfortunately, we all encouraged it by buying into the coverage. That coverage is part of the reason we’re here.

Britney needed help. She understood that and was more than willing to get help.

The conservatorship

Before watching this documentary, I wasn’t completely aware of what it meant. I understood that people were upset, but I didn’t get why. As an outsider looking in, it seemed like the right thing. I felt guilty for being so naive. Britney deserves so much better. Not because of her fame, but because she’s a person too!

What a conservatorship is, is giving up all of your control over yourself. You essentially have no real rights. Your conservator has the right to make all of your decisions with your best interest at heart. Do they all way have those? No, especially not in Britney’s case. Britney’s case is different for a variety of reasons. I believe the number one reason is how competent Britney is.

Most, if not all other, conservatorships are in place for people who can’t physically take care of themselves, people who aren’t in the right state of mind. It’s very typical with older people. Britney was put under a “temporary” conservatorship before she turned thirty. That was in 2008.

At that point, Britney was still touring and even completed a residency in Vegas. She also had an understanding of the conservatorship. She was okay with it. She had one request, she didn’t want her father to be her conservator. Who’s her conservator? Her father Jamie spears.

Britney has said that she won’t work again until her father is no longer her conservator. I think that statement just speaks volumes! She’s not even against the conservatorship! She just doesn’t want her dad to do it.

This whole situation is beyond mind-blowing! I honestly don’t think I could explain this situation and give it the justice it deserves. You need to watch this documentary. If you’ve watched this documentary, you need to watch it again.

We owe it to Britney to hear her story and listen. We can also take the media that destroyed her and use it to do something good.
