Summer Nights

It’s been a long time since I’ve been on a date. So long, in fact, I can’t remember when it was. With the world coming back to life, I’m ready. What’s the best way to prepare, you might ask? With a list of my top ten summer date ideas, of course.

  1. A picnic: Having a picnic is one of those activities that never grows old. What’s great about making it a date is the timing. The majority of picnics take place during daylight hours. Maybe, this is the first date. Maybe, this is a meet in person for the first time. Something about the sun being present feels safer. Picnics also happen in crowded areas, like parks or on beaches. That might make it more comfortable. It’s also a great excuse to have your best friend keep an eye on you! We’re not crazy; we just watch a lot of crime documentaries.
  2. Bar: Tiki bars, beach bars, and riverside bars are hidden gems, especially on the East Coast. Here we only have maybe six months to enjoy them, emphasis on the maybe. Either way, the atmosphere is ideal for all types of dates, romantic and otherwise. Let’s be honest a Pina Colada tastes better in the fresh air.
  3. Drive-in theater: This trend was brought to you by a pandemic. I understand that drive-ins have been around for (what feels like) forever. But there’s been a surge in theaters over the past year. There’s more of an intimacy with a drive-in than a stereotypical theater. When’s the last time you could talk or comment during a movie? And not be disruptive. Plus, better snacks. Think of the endless food options; dinner and a movie in one.
  4. Movie on a river: There is a river bar that does this. They provide Intertubes on the river for people to sit comfortably. If you have a boat, there are docks to park. They project a movie on a massive screen. Can you think of a better summer night? Not to mention, they have great drinks.
  5. Carnival: Is it more or less cliche than a picnic? Regardless, you’re never too old for a carnival. There’s a little bit of everything, food, rides, people watching. It’s another atmosphere that feels safe. Again, invite your best friend to keep a close eye! Then have that friend snap an iconic photo of your first kiss at the top of the Ferris wheel. If you don’t kiss at the top of the Ferris wheel, did you
  6. Concert: There is no better vibe than a concert. It takes the cake for the casual and the chill.
  7. Hike: Summer is all about casual and chill vibes. This summer, in particular, is about taking care of our person. Having a person to do that with makes it more enjoyable. It’s a good excuse for waking up before the sun or skipping happy hour to see the sunset from a different vantage point.
  8. Brunch: Do you know what the best reward is after an early hike? Mimosas and coffee! And pancakes, you can’t forget the pancakes.
  9. Beach: Is there more to say? Laying on the beach, walking through the sand, reenacting the iconic Grease moment; you can’t tell me that doesn’t sound heavenly! At the risk of sounding like a broken record, it’s another safe first-date space. Do I watch/listen to too much true crime? Yes, but we’re taking care of each other!
  10. Mini-golf: This is a real crowd pleaser! Friendly competition and fresh air at its finest. An unpopular opinion people don’t mini-golf enough! Can we make this summer the summer of mini-golf?

It’s a summer of opportunities! Take them and enjoy them. Make them a date, romantic or otherwise. What do they say? How does it go? The world is your oyster.
