If I’m having a good hair day then I can conquer the world. Anyone else? You know exactly what I’m talking about; it’s styled just the way you crave, laying with the perfect amount of volume, but not frizzy. It looks absolutely lush paired with the confidence it’s brought as your feature piece.
If I’m having a bad hair day then I’m miserable and physically uncomfortable. You know exactly what I mean; flipping the part from one side to the other until you finally give up and pull it into a messy up-do, but of course it doesn’t look like the ones from Pinterest. 15 minutes later and 20 minutes late you pull it into a baseball hat and leave grumpy.
I’ve had more bad hair days than good. I’ve made questionable hair decisions that will haunt my memories and photo albums. Hair horror stories to fill the next century, but that’s because I didn’t understand my hair. I also had one really, REALLY bad cut that I’ve spent years repairing.
Like everything about us, our hair is unique. We may share similar struggles, textures, and fullness, but one style, product; cut {insert appropriate word here} does not fit all.
I’ve always had a very full head of hair. Blessed from day one. My hair has always been thick, but it was stick straight till about age 7. Now your girl has Shirley Temple curls. Not only are these curls super thick, but also frizzy. I’ll be honest, I didn’t know how to style them and I still don’t know much. So, there are a lot of crunchy hair photos with sadly straight bangs. If you were in middle school in the mid2000s then you know. You probably have those photos hidden too! All I’m going to say is, my straightener is a savior.
I had to wait till age 12, but the second I was allowed that straightener I kissed the crispy trend goodbye. Needless to say, I spent most of middle and early high school with pin straight hair. Once I discovered a curling wand, because I do not to this day know how to use the clamp on a curling iron, brought some of my curl back for fun.
Who doesn’t love a cheeky hair change?
I live for a cheeky hair change. Is it the Gemini in me? Maybe, but I’m always looking for a way to revamp my style. Is there a better place to start than your hair? I’ve been a blonde {always fun} and I’ve done the blonde ombre. I’ve been a red head {personal favorite, any shade} in a couple different shades and I’ve done the red ombre. I’ve also done a chocolate brown. My hair is currently my natural shade, which is black and ironically another personal favorite.
Changing your hair color is fun, but can be expensive. So, what fulfills that thrill in a budget friendly way? Cutting it of course! *I’d like to director your attention back to the beginning of this piece for just a second* -Insert regret right about here.
Once I was old enough to decide the cut of my hair I kept it fairly long. Always with a side part, but I did have blunt bangs twice in the last decade. You know, when they were the trend in 2012 and by the mistake of a hairdresser in 2014. I would however always cut it short for the summer. Shoulder length because it grows so quickly.
In 2015, I was in need of a change. So, I cut most of my hair off. I was joining the lob trend and I was obsessed. It made me look like an adult {people think I look 17; I’m 25}. It was also super quick to style and worked so well with my hair itself.
Fast-forward, January 2016: *Knock, knock* who’s there? Regret, regret is still there.
I wanted my lob back. I needed my lob back. So, I went back and asked for the same haircut and came out butchered. It was crooked in the back. One side was longer than the other in the front. It basically looked like someone had used a pair of craft scissors. I was not okay. Does it sound dramatic? Probably, but I was miserable. August 2016, I got hair extensions and those extensions made me feel like me again.
I took the extensions out in October 2016 and my hair had grown. It was much less crooked and much more livable.
Like I said, my hair was growing, but it wasn’t growing like it use to. I didn’t know what to do. I was trying everything I could think of. Different types of treatments, different supplements, and anything YouTube suggested.
About a year ago, I saw almost every girl on YouTube gushing about Function of Beauty. If you’ve been following my sub-series then you know I’m a sucker for a subscription.
If you’re not familiar with Function of Beauty, it’s a personalized shampoo, conditioner, and other hair treatment subscription service. You don’t have to subscribe to purchase, but I promise once you try it you’ll want to.

You also can pick your scent and the strength of the scent; mines Nude (p)each and I like it strong. You can also have it unscented if that’s more your speed. They also allow you to choose the color. You can mix and match or have no color at all. The best part by far, they are vegan, cruelty-free, sulfate free, paraben free, and sustainability focused.
You can also decide how often you receive your shampoo, conditioner, and any other hair treatments. So, you’ll never be without! That’s always the worst. You’re in the shower and you go to wash your hair, but there’s barely any shampoo left. You’re soaking wet banging the bottom of the bottle like it’s diner ketchup praying for just a little more off the sides.
Every bottle has your name on it, so it’ll never be confused with anyone else. It’s also packed with stickers to add a little more personal touch.
Since I switched to Function of Beauty my hair is thriving. It’s so long and just looks healthy. It’s also super soft after I was it and in between washes. You can’t say that about every shampoo!
If you’re in the middle of your own hair horror I highly recommend Function of Beauty. I was skeptical at first, but I purchased it anyway and I was in love. The more I used it the better it got. It was the first time I’d ever seen my hair get along with my shampoo and conditioner so well. After my first purchase, which was about 5 months in, I decided to subscribe.
I don’t have good hair days every day, but the bad hair days are far and few in between now.
Conquering the world one hair flip at a time.
