Halloween is this Saturday. It looks a little different than usual, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be filled with spooky season fun. Personally, social distancing or quarantining doesn’t affect my usual Halloween plans because I always spend it inside on the couch watching horror flicks. However, I want to spice up my life. Don’t get me wrong, I love spending my Halloweens super cozy with Michael Myers and a handful of candy corn. But does anyone else feel like all they’ve done is binge watch every streaming service and consume a concerning amount of sugar? There’s nothing wrong with it, but there’s got to be a more exciting way to spend the holiday.
I’m thinking of a quarantine costume party. Within guidelines of course! A lot of places are open, and more people are spending time together. A costume party or any party for that matter doesn’t need to be a massive blow out. You can still have fun with a smaller group of people. I’m talking about a variety of Halloween themed games. Does anyone remember Fear Factor? Some of those games are super simple to recreate. All you need are a couple of blindfolds and weird food combos or baby food. Then you have each contestant guess and whoever gets the most correct wins. You can also never go wrong with a traditional costume contest, but it needs a fun twist. All the costumes need to be do it yourself; the most creative costume wins. Or you all have to create a costume in 30 minutes with things you find around the house and the best costume wins. That could also be a freakin blast. The quarantine times don’t have to ruin all the fun.
Maybe a costume party isn’t your thing, but a massive movie night is. You guys know how I feel about a great movie night in. If you haven’t read Movie Moment yet come back and click here when you’re done with this post! It’s a tradition in my house to watch the original Halloween then take on a never before seen {usually only me who hasn’t seen} cult classic. As comforting as that movie night is, 2020 has kind of taken the fun out of it. I could do that on a regular Monday night and not think twice. So, how can I make it Halloween special? Again, if you haven’t read Movie Moment you need to click here. If you have read it then you already know about a magical movie night outside. For my fellow East Coasters, there is a good chance it’s going to be freezing on Halloween, so you could do this inside. Unless you are lucky enough to have a fire pit of some sort. Is there anything more fall than a horror movie, fire, and homemade smores? I’m going to say no. Halloween is also a great reason to have a viewing party. Maybe you have a small group of people who have been quarantining and following guidelines and you’re super comfortable being around them. Invite them over and go full movie mode. Pick up a ton of those box candies or just steal from the stash you grabbed in case there were trick-or-treaters. Pop some popcorn but go all out and get the flavor powders to top the popcorn off. You could also just get fancy with a cheeseboard and some good wine. The options are endless and completely customizable for you!
This is where things get spicy. I wanted something different this year and I’ve found it.

I’m doing a scavenger hunt. I know what you’re probably thinking, “Aly isn’t that more of like an Easter thing. Ya know, egg hunt.” Yes, if you grew up anything like me it screams Easter. However, this is 2020 and if we’ve learned anything we have to step out of our normal boxes. So, this year we’re creating goodie bags and hiding them in the backyard. We’ve got to work for the goods, ya know? Almost everyone participating in this little event is over the age of 21. Always drink responsibly. There will be candy in these goodie bags, but we’re also popping a couple of those small liquor and wine bottles in as well. It’s a fun little twist on the tradition. The under 21 crew gets some extra candy this year. Trick-or-treating doesn’t need to be canceled. It can also involve everyone. Whether you’re an adult who misses the excitement of trick-or-treating or you are {or have} kids that don’t feel comfortable with going out during the pandemic times; this is a perfect way to keep the tradition or start a new one.
Halloween doesn’t have to be canceled this year just modified. I hope you all have a safe and fun Halloween!
