The Week of 5am

If you’ve read my 20 Things For 2020 post then you’re familiar with my resolutions. If you haven’t read it yet, what are you waiting for?

My 9th resolution was to become more of a morning person. I adore productive mornings and genuinely feel better throughout the day when I have a productive start. However, my snooze button and I are currently seeing each other on a regular basis and I don’t know how to let him down easy.

I’ve accepted that I will never be a morning person, especially before my coffee, but I thought it would be interesting to see how my days would change waking up at 5am. I did this for a week and here is what happened:

Now I want to preface this by saying, I do have work days were I have to be up as early as 2am, but getting up at 5am is even harder.

Monday: I set my alarm for 4:50am because of course, I had to hit snooze. By 5 I was regretting everything. Monday’s are not meant to be started before the sun but, I was now giving myself an extra hour. What could be accomplished? I will admit that I didn’t use this to my full advantage. I may or may not have spent a solid 30 minutes scrolling through Instagram {@alyspaigee –shameless plug}. I typically don’t go on my phone until my morning workout between 7:30 and 8, but who doesn’t love being reacquainted with the world? The early wakeup call didn’t hit me until about 2pm. It was nothing a third cup of coffee couldn’t fix.

Tuesday: Was the second day easier? No. Did I still hit snooze? Yes. BUT I found a better way to spend that extra hour. After my usual wakeup routine {making my bed, washing my face, the usual} I curled into my chair with a book, “Note To Self.”—Look at me tackling two resolution at the same time, seriously you should check that post out. By the time I needed to start getting ready I felt calm. My head was in a clearer space and I felt more ready than most days. I was crashing yet again by 2pm, but that’s what afternoon pick me ups were created for, right?

Wednesday: By mid week the early morning was getting easier. I decided to throw a little self-care into the mix. What’s better than a fresh brewed cup of coffee? A coffee face mask, that’s what. If you saw my last post, my winter essentials, then you know I’m a little obsessed with Lush Cosmetics cup o’coffee. It caffeinates your skin and genuinely wakes you up. Highly recommend adding a face mask to your morning routine a couple times a week. I promise, it’s worth it. I don’t know if it was the added caffeine on my face or my body starting to understand 5am, but by 2pm I wasn’t crashing like previous days. Did I still have that third cup of coffee? Of course.

Thursday: This was the morning without snooze. After my usual wakeup routine, I brewed a fresh cup of coffee, grabbed my journal, and curled into my chair while I let my face mask sit. Three of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Honestly, this single morning made 5am glorious. If Tuesday felt a sense of calm, Thursday was thriving with a sense of serenity. There was no mid day crash, but I couldn’t give up my afternoon coffee.

Friday: I had to be up at 2am for work. This was a rough day. I spent a solid 8 hours outside in freezing temperatures and the wind took down my large cold brew before I could even take a sip. That mid day crash hit hard and no amount of coffee could save me.

Saturday: I’m always up before 5 on Saturdays for work, so this was nothing new. I will also be the first to admit, if I don’t have anything to do on Saturday I crash hard. Saturday is the day of pre-rest, right?

Sunday: On Sunday’s we sleep in.

After one week of 5am wakeup calls, I decided that I’m still not a morning person. I did decide that I want to incorporate more of these things into my current morning routine. I’ve definitely developed a new appreciation for mornings, especially the ones filled with good vibes.
